L.A. Chronicles:Son of former 49ers CEO killed in boat crash off Catalina Island

Son of former 49ers CEO killed in boat crash off Catalina Island.

A man killed early Sunday when two boats collided in the waters off Catalina
Island was identified as the son of the former chief executive of the San
Francisco 49ers, according to family members.

The crash, reported about 1:20 a.m. near Descanso Bay about a quarter of a
mile northeast of Casino Point, left three people injured, according to the U.S.
Coast Guard. A fifth person involved in the collision is still missing.

The man killed was identified as Michael Harris, the son of Peter Harris, a
Bay Area-businessman who was the chief executive of the National Football League
49ers from 2000 to 2004, according to statements posted on Facebook by Peter
Harris and his wife, Jan Johnston Harris.

“This was a young man who was real, sincere, a great listener, always
interested, warm, full of humor with the attendant laughter, who sincerely loved
and prized family,” Peter Harris said in the Facebook post. “He filled up my
heart and now he is gone.”

According to the Coast Guard, a dingy with five people aboard collided with
another vessel. The three injured passengers were transported to UCLA Medical
Center. Two of the passengers suffered minor injuries and the other a head
injury, authorities said.

The Coast Guard said crews have continued to search for the fifth passenger
of the dingy.
