TEXAS TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Michigan State Police say they have a “strong suspect” in custody in connection to a series of apparently random shootings that have killed at least five people, including an 8-year-old child.
Lt. David Hines made the announcement around 1:30 a.m.
He said the man and his vehicle match the description of the getaway vehicle and suspect who fired shots at three locations.
Kalamazoo County Undersheriff Paul Matyas said the gunman was driving around randomly shooting people.
Police believe the suspect is a white man who is driving a dark blue Chevrolet HHR.
The investigation began around 7:50 p.m. at the Meadows Townhomes parking lot in Richland Township, where police said a woman was shot several times.Kalamazoo County Undersheriff Paul Matyas said she is in serious condition.
NBC reports about three hours later, police were then called to Seelye Kia dealership located at 3820 Stadium Drive in Kalamazoo. Authorities said a father and son were among those killed at the dealership.
Officers were then called to the parking lot of a nearby Cracker Barrel restaurant where police said three people were killed, including an 8-year-old child. Two people are in critical condition, authorities said.
Matyas told NBC News the suspect got out of his car at the Cracker Barrell and had a brief conversation with people in two other cars before firing into both vehicles.
Gunfire was then reported around 12:30 a.m. Sunday at OP Avenue and 6th Street in Texas Township, near the Cracker Barrel.
