Polar vortex expected to bring 'dangerously' low temps to U.S.

The Polar Vortex is stretching down from the Arctic to the Midewest and Northeast regions of the United States a little earlier this winter than in previous years, bringing with it punishing and dangerous cold. The midwest and northeast regions of the United States are preparing for some of the coldest winter temperatures in the last hundred years, as meteorologists warn the blast will roll through around mid-week.

Temperatures in some parts of the country are expected reach highs 20 to 30 degrees below their average and wind chills may drop as far as 40 degrees below zero thanks to the Polar Vortex making another appearance in the U.S.

The Polar Vortex, which is not a new meteorological concept despite only being popularly known for the last few years, occurs when the jet stream is interrupted and much colder air from the Arctic travels south.

The Vortex's visit is a little early this year -- it made its first memorable appearance in January 2014 and is usually expected later in winter -- but will be no less brutal.

States in the northern Plains, from the Dakotas east to Minnesota and Wisconsin, are expected to experience high temperatures in the single digits, while the Northeast will likely see temperatures in the teens, all of which is expected to be made worse by wind.

As the Vortex stretches south, meteorologists say cities such as Chicago will see single-digit temperatures by Thursday, and New York City should be in the high 20s and low 30s from at least Wednesday until sometime Saturday.

Later in the week, snow is expected to travel across the country, from the Northwest and northern Plains Thursday, across the Midwest Friday and likely to the Northeast by Friday or Saturday.

The week of wintry weather is expected to make conditions worse in the Midwest and some of the Northeast, which is already digging out from snow last weekend. Parts of New England already had closed some schools and roads, and airports in Chicago cancelled hundreds of flights on Sunday as a winter storm bore down on the city.
